Alexander Niclasson, director and artistic leader

Studied at The Royal Danish Music Conservatoire and the Stockholm Opera. Private singing studies for Sonny E Peterson and Nicolai Gedda. Has sung roles at Folk Opera, Vadstena Academy, Drottningholm Castle Theater and Läckö Castle Opera. He is one of the country’s foremost Bach tenors and often evangelist in both the John and Matthew Passions. Has been working at Opera på Skäret since its beginning and has directed La Boheme, La Traviata, Il Tabarro, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and the Swedish Kronofogdarne and Slåtterölet, to which he also wrote a new libretto.

Lorenzo Coladonato, conductor

Born in Italy, Lorenzo studied piano, composition, and conducting at the Verdi-Conservatoire in Milano. After his graduation he started out as a pianist and coach in Zürich, where he also made his debut as an Opera Conductor.
After nine years in Zürich he became the Chief Conductor for Baden-Baden’s Philharmonic Orchestra, where he also conducted opera. Since then he has been the Chief Conductor at State Opera in Mersin, Turkey.

Some of the other orchestras he has worked with as a Guest Conductor include Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Opera House Orchestra, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Symphony Orchestra of New Russia – Moscow, the National Philharmonic of Russia, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Norddeutsche Philharmonie – Rostock, Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie – Konstanz, China National Centre for Performing Arts Orchestra – Beijing.

Tosca, La Bohéme, Don Carlo, Macbeth, Eugen Onegin, La Sonnambula and Turandot are operas on his repertoire, but also unusal works like Genoveva by Robert Schumann.
Lorenzo has conducted at many opera festivals in the past, but The Magic Flute was his debut at Opera på Skäret.

Sven Östberg, scenography

Sven Östberg has been the scenographer for most of the operas here at Opera på Skäret; Aida, Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor, Barberaren i Sevilla, La Traviata , The Flying Dutchman, Madama Butterfly, Don Carlo and The Magic Flute.

He has also been a Director, Revue Writer, Circus Artist and Principal at Wendelsbergs Folkhögskola, where he teaches actors.

Sigyn Stenqvist, Costume

Set Designer, Costume Designer and Décor Painter who works in the UK, Denmark and Hong Kong. In Sweden she has worked at Riksteatern, Cirkus Cirkör, and Teater3 to mention a few. She has a wide range of design experience and has worked in theatre, circus, dance, opera and advertising.

She has previously done the costume design for La Bohéme, Carmen, Don Carlo and The Magic Flute at Opera på Skäret.

Kevin Wyn-Jones, lighting

He has been the Lighting Master at Folkoperan from 1998-2004, while also working at other theatres and opera houses in Sweden and Europe. He is often hired at opera houses in countries like Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Germany and Poland.

At Opera på Skäret he has been the Lighting Designer for Lucia di Lammermoor, Barber of Seville, La Traviata, The Flying Dutchman, Madama Butterfly, Don Carlo and The Magic Flute.

Calaf – Richard Bauer

Brazilian tenor who after studying for the famous Brazilian tenor Benito Marescha made his professional debut in 1996 as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor which became the start of an international career with roles such as Alvaro in Power of Destiny, Alfredo in La Traviata, Duke of Rigoletto, Gustav the III in the Masquerade Ball, Rodolpho in La Boheme, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and more. In recent years, Bauer has established himself in the dramatic box with roles such as Canio in I Pagliacci, the title role in Andrea Chenier, Don Josè in Carmen, Calaf in Turandot and the title role in Othello which was also his first appearance at Opera på Skäret in 2014.

 

Calaf – Kjetil Støa

This Norwegian tenor has, after studying at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim and The Stockholm University College already has a broad repertoire, with roles such as Nemorino in Kärleksdrycken, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Macduff in Macbeth and Calaf in Turandot.
He has sung on Scandinavian scenes such as The Norwegian Opera, Folk Opera in Stockholm, Oskarsborg Opera, Ringsaker Opera, Opera in Kristiansund, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Opera, Arctic Symphony Orchestra and Opera.
Tamino in The Magic Flute was Kjetil’s debut at Opera på Skäret.

 

Turandot – Trine Møller

Soprano from Denmark. Has studied at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory and the Royal Academy Opera School in London. Began her career as a mezzo-soprano with roles such as Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte, Cherubino in Figaro’s Wedding, Olga in Eugene Onegin, Angelina in Cinderella etc. Was very successful in switching from mezzo-soprano to dramatic soprano in roles such as Tosca and  Turandot at the Gut Immling festival in Germany. After Opera på Skäret, she will sing the same role in Japan and Brünnhilde in Wagner’s opera Die Walküre in Germany.

Turandot – Wioletta Chodowicz

Soprano from Poland trained at Karol Lipinski Academy of Music. Among the roles she performed in are the title roles in Rusalka, Katia Kabanova and Countess Maritza, Marie in Wozzeck, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly, Mimi in La Boheme, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and Micaela in Carmen. She has sung on scenes such as Krakow Opera, Wroclaw, Prague National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Israeli Opera and Glyndebourne to name a few.

 

Ping – Timothy Nelson

Young baritone from England studying at the Royal College of Music. Has sung at, among other places, Glyndebourne Opera, Opera North, English Touring Opera and The Grange Festival.

 

Pang – Stevan Karanac

Lyrical tenor from Serbia trained at the Faculty of Music Arts in Belgrade. Has sung roles such as Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Tamino in The Magic Flute to name a few. Stevan is frequently employed at the National Theater in Belgrade.

 

Pong – Markus Pettersson

Swedish tenor trained at the Opera University in Stockholm. Has sung roles at the Gothenburg Opera, Folkoperan and participated in Opera på Skäret’s set of The Flying Dutchman 2016 as Steuermann.

 

Liu  – Magdalena Molendowska

Polish soprano who, after studying at the S. Moniuszko Music Academy in Gdansk and Guildhall School of Music and Drama made success in roles at Opera North as Minnie in La Fanciulla del West and Katerina in The Greek Passion. She has performed at the Krakow Opera as Micaela in Carmen as well as La Contessa in Figaro’s Wedding and the title role in Puccini’s Tosca at Wroclaw Opera.

 

Liu – Victoria Cannizzo

American soprano who studied at Binghamton University and the University of Chicago. Recently performed the title role in Tosca in Casciana Terme in Italy, Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly in New Jersey, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in Hong Kong and Suzel in Mascagni’s opera LÁmico Fritz at the Baltimore Opera.

 

Timur – Vladislav Popov

Russian bass trained at Galina Vishnevskaya’s Opera Center and at Musical Institure Ippolitov-Ivanov in Moscow. He is a soloist at Ekaterinburg Opera where he has performed the role of Daland in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Sarastro in The Magic Flute and Sparafucile in Rigoletto.

Mandarin – Juha Pikkarainen

Finnish bass baritone who began his artistic career as an actor and director. Educated at the Theater Academy in Helsinki and Tampere University, the Department of performing arts and private singing studies for Juha Uusitalo and Jukka Rasilainen. Juha has sung roles at Finnish National Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Opera Aino. Among the roles are Don Magnifico in Cinderella, Amonasro in Aida and Escamillio in Carmen. Acting as an actor on both film and theater scenes in Finland. Juha Pikkarainen makes his first appearance in Sweden with the role of Mandarin in Turandot.

 

Emperor – Thomas Bärlin

Thomas participates for the seventh year in a row at Opera på Skäret where he has sung in the choir and made Giuseppe in La Traviata 2015 and the Registrar in Madama Butterfly 2017. Among other engagements can be mentioned Jesus Christ Superstar, which was played in Stockholm during the water festival 1992-1996, Kiss on Folkteatern in Gävle 2011 and Canio in Opera Tättinpå’s set of Pajazzo 2017.

 

Emperor – Martin Lindau

After studies at the Ingesund School of Music in Arvika and the Music Conservatory in Como, Italy, he has been active in, among other things, Hamburg, Germany and London, England and Bergamo, Desio, Varese in Italy. He has sung the title role in Wagner’s Lohengrin, Concert 2013, Don Basilio at Figaro’s Wedding 2015, and Cavarado Dossi in Tosca, 2017. He has also performed roles in more modern works such as Mathias Husman’s opera Dame against Noten and Stephen Fry’s opera The Life to Come. He also performed̊ the title role in Sweeny Todd in Arvika 2010. Martin has previously participated in Opera på Skärets choir.
