Opera på Skäret is staging Un Ballo in Maschera by Giuseppe Verdi, the only great opera piece in the history of opera, where the storyline takes place in Sweden. Staying faithful to our tradition, we will be singing in the original language. So we welcome you to a ”Swedish” opera – sung in Italian!
Giuseppe Verdi based Un Ballo in Maschera on a libretto about the murder of Gustav III 1792. But after resistance from the Italian censorship, the script was rewritten with the storyline taking place in Boston and the Swedish Royal was changed to an American Count.
The last few decades, Un Ballo in Maschera has been played in many different versions in Sweden. Now when Opera på Skäret is doing the opera, it will be a highly dramatic Swedish version, with Gustav III in focus and with the storyline taking place at the opera in the Royal Court in Stockholm.
In the roles we have hand-picked international star soloists from ten different countries, and Svenska Kammarorkestern (The Swedish Chamber Orchestra) will be led by the Italian Conductor Lorenzo Coladonato. There will be 12 shows of Un Ballo in Maschera between 30th July and 28th August 2022. The text will be translated to Swedish on screen.
