Maria Ros

This is the second year I have the privilege of working in the extraordinary venue at Opera på Skäret. The space is truly one of a kind: an enormous space with soaring ceilings, where light can fully come into its own. As a lighting designer, it offers me the freedom to push creative boundaries. For this year’s Turandot, the set designer Sven Östberg has created an evocative scenography – a cage within another cage. It is a concept that gives me exciting opportunities to work with light and shadow, while also presenting a unique challenge: how do we ensure the singers remain visible through the bars

Turandot holds special meaning for me. It was one of the first operas I worked on as a lighting technician at Folwkoperan in Stockholm, about 30 years ago. To now return to this powerful work and design the lighting for it is both meaningful and a true joy.
